FEATURED SHOW:
"MI BUENOS AIRES QUERIDO, the Peso and the People":
Buenos Aires, or Baires, as Argentineans often refer to it, is a multi-faceted cultural capital of Latin America – a fast moving city that combines the zest and energy of New York with the grand style and impressive architecture of Milan, Rome or Madrid. In spite of a challenged economy, Argentineans still love to dress well and consumerism is everywhere: large, opulent shopping centers, billboards and ads, elegant window displays. The interaction between the glamorous advertising and the daily grind of the people forms the theme of this exhibition. There is a clear discrepancy and a striking, sometimes even comical contrast between the offered dream and the reality of everyday life. The ramifications are essentially the same in every big city, but nowhere as clearly noticeable as in Buenos Aires: people rush from home to work and from work to home, trying to keep up with the insanity of ever higher demands to reach an unreal dream that remains as luring as it is elusive. "Mi Buenos Aires Querido" (My Beloved Buenos Aires) is a famous tango from the thirties, sung by the legendary Carlos Gardel – evoking nostalgic memories of a time when Argentina was one of the richest countries in the world. Photographs will be printed in a limited edition of twenty (Archival Fine Art Prints, 17" x 22").
FEATURED ARTIST:
Martin Cohen (Amsterdam, 1955) graduated from the Dutch Film Academy and soon moved to New York, where he combined his interests in theater, film and photography. As a photojournalist, he traveled the globe, through Europe, Africa and later the USSR, at the height of glasnost and perestroika. Over the past years, he explored Latin America and most recently showed fifty images of Havana in "CUBA - La Revolución y La Habana Contemporanea", a major exhibition at the beautiful Palais de Glace in Buenos Aires (www.palaisdeglace.org). Over 10.000 people came to see the work, which received extensive coverage and critical acclaim in the Argentinean media. Distinguished by several awards and commendations (PDN Awards 1996, International Photography Awards 2004), Martin Cohen has continued to output a highly personal and spirited body of work. His unique talent in capturing the human condition has earned him solo exhibitions in Amsterdam, New York, Havana and Los Angeles. He lives in Santa Monica with his Argentinean wife Carolina.
